Barako signs Nigerian

Barako Bull has hired veteran Jeff Varem of Nigeria to replace Scooter McFadgon in the hope of turning its fortune around in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup.

Red Bull believes that the 6-foot-5 Varem, who recently played in Iran, is the answer to some of its problems, especially in their defensive strategy.

His rebounding prowess and inside defense, according to coach Leo Isaac, will surely help their cause this time.

McFadgon was not lacking in talent but many believed that he’s too small to defend against fellow imports.

Barako Bull (formerly Red Bull) currently sports a 2-5, win-loss card, tied with defending champion Barangay Ginebra and Alaska for seventh in the team standings.

Varem played eight games with Coca-Cola in this same conference two seasons back when he replaced Anthony Johnson. He was released, however, by the Tigers in exchange for Rashad Bell.

Johnson is now the current import of Sta. Lucia which sports a 5-2 card.

“Kung sa makaka-puntos, makaka-score naman siya. But what we expect from him is his defensive tenacity and his rebounding, which the teams lacks,” Isaac said of his import who arrived Wednesday morning but only had his first practice Thursday.

The 6-foot-4 McFadgon averaged solid numbers with his 33.0 point-production, which was second among imports, but his 7.1 rebounds ranks last (10th) while his other stats were not also impressive, 3.5 assists (5th), 0.5 steals (9th) and 0.1 blocks (9th).
