Simon jumper caps Purefoods’ comeback win

MANILA, Philippines – Peter June Simon nailed a fade away jumper in the waning seconds, capping Purefoods’ comeback from a 17-point deficit in an 82-78 win over Burger King Wednesday night in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Coming in as a late substitute for Topex Robinson, Simon buried the go-ahead basket with Celino Cruz’s hand right on his face, the ball rolling in and out of the basket before finally falling in and broke the game’s last deadlock at 78.

Then in the ensuing inbound play, Simon stole Shawn Daniels’ weak pass that netted a foul and two free throws for Purefoods import Jamar Thorpe. The Giants import, who paced Purefoods with 28 points, could only split his charities but enough to give his team an 81-78 lead with 13 seconds left.

The victory was the second straight for the Giants as they now improved above the .500 mark with a 4-3 record for solo third place.

Kerby Raymundo added 20 and four rebounds while James Yap tallied 13, including a free throw with eight seconds left for the marginal score.

The Whoppers fell to 4-4.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Burger King and coach Yeng Guiao as they even led by as many as 17 points twice in the second period, the last at 43-27.

But the Giants clawed their way back into the game, eventually tying the count at 77-77 on Robinson’s split free throws before taking a one-point lead on a Kerby Raymundo basket following a technical foul called on Guiao.

Erick Rodriguez then tied the game at 78 by making one of two from the foul line.

Trailing by three (78-81), the Whoppers went to Gary David for the game-tying trey, but the former Lyceum mainstay lost handle of the leather that finally doomed Burger King. – GMANews.TV

Giants battle back from 17 points down

Romel Adducul, Topex Robinson and Peter June Simon lent Jahmar Thorpe a big hand in extending his lifeline as Purefoods import.

Adducul, Robinson and Simon played key roles as the Giants pulled off a come-from-behind 82-78 win over the Burger King Whoppers in the Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

Adducul and Robinson sparkled defensively as Purefoods held Burger King without a single field-goal basket in the last six minutes of play while Simon came through with the clutch plays at endgame clinching the win that enabled the Giants to breach the .500 mark with a 4-3 win-loss card.

Burger King suffered a second straight defeat and reeled on the lower half of the chart with a 4-4 slate.

"After playing flat in the first half, we came out with a defensive mindset in the second half. That's why I used Romel Adducul and Topex Robinson whom I expected to give us a lift not only physically but emotionally. They did, and obviously they're the biggest stars in this game," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

"Our team is packed with offensive arsenal. It's just that sometimes, I falter with the timing. This time napaganda ang bunot ko. When I sent in PJ (Simon), he didn't just come through with a big shot but also got a big steal. He made me look good as a coach, at least in this game," Gregorio also said.

Adducul and Robinson provided the Giants tremendous intensity and energy defensively, sparking a rally from an 11-point deficit, 62-73, with 8:45 left to play.

And with the game on the line, Simon came off the bench, pumping in the go-ahead basket then pulling off a steal that paved the way for a Thorpe charity making it 81-78 with only 17 ticks left.

Robinson stole one more time with time down to eight seconds as the Giants eventually secured the win.

Offensively, Thorpe and Kerby Raymundo led the way for the Giants with the former scattering 28 points and the latter contributing 20.

"Thorpe played well. He played well specially in the third quarter when we made a crucial run. He had a big hand in this win, and for as long as we're winning, his lifeline increases," said Gregorio.

"Everybody in this team, specially our import, is evaluated after every loss. He stays for as long as we keep on winning," added Gregorio on the fate of Thorpe with old import Marquin Chandler now available to fly in anytime.

Thorpe gutted it out on the floor as he also came through with 12 rebounds, three steals and one assist in 40 minutes of action.

Shawn Daniels only had 13 points and 14 rebounds, hastening their downfall with two missed charities with BK staring at a 78-81 deficit with 15.4 ticks to go.

The Whoppers were ahead by eight at 75-67 before going without a field-goal basket the rest of the way.

They were still ahead by five at 77-72 before the Giants unleashed a key six-to-nothing roll to finally surge ahead at 78-77. (NC)

the BEST ka talaga coach!!!
