Alaska, Burger in crucial tiff

Alaska and Burger King, two teams still in contention for one of two outright semifinals seats, clash in a pivotal game that should determine their chances for that said incentive in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup Sunday at the Astrodome in Pasay City.

The Whopper and the Aces collide in the main game of another doubleheader at 6:30 p.m., right after Barako Bull and Coca-Cola clash at 4 o’clock.

Burger King is currently in a four-way tie for fourth with defending champion Ginebra, Talk ’N Text and Rain or Shine, while Alaska is just one game behind with a 4-6 win-loss card, followed by Coke (2-6) and Barako Bull (2-8).

The Gin Kings gained their share of fourth with a 97-90 decision over Talk ’N Text last Friday.

Still leading the season-ending conference is San Miguel Beer (8-0), while Purefoods and Sta. Lucia Realty share second with similar 6-3 records.

Burger King is coming off a 99-89 win over Barako Bull last Thursday that saw ace gunner Gary David and wingman Arwind Santos combine for 52 points to lead the Whopper in snapping a three-game skid.

However, Alaska won its last two games prior to the PBA All-Star Week Festivities, where head coach Tim Cone mentored the South team. The Aces downed the Barako Energy KingBoosters, 100-90, last April 17 and then walloped the Purefoods Giants, 80-74, two days later.

“We are establishing a good rhythm just before the All-Star break, so we’re hoping we can continue with it as we progress to the playoffs,” Cone, whose team will face Burger King for the first time in this import-flavored conference, said.

“Our stretch run begins,” Cone added.

Expected to provide leadership for both teams are former Best Import winner Ro Ellis for the Aces, and Shawn Daniels for the Whopper.

Providing help for Alaska are former two-time MVP Willie Miller, Sonny Thoss, LA Tenorio, Jeff Cariaso, Tony dela Cruz and Reynel Hugnatan, while Burger King will have Santos, David, Wynne Arboleda and Egay Billones.

Equally exciting is the match between Coke and Barako Bull, which is hoping to end a four-game losing skid.
