THE ROCK, MR. FEARLESS SHINE BRIGHTEST

Co-Players of the Week May 18 to 24

THERE may be a seven-year difference in their age, but Barangay Ginebra’s Ronald Tubid and Coca-Cola’s Asi Taulava have one thing in common: A desire to lead by example.

No wonder they provided their respective teams the energy for much-needed wins and into coveted slots in the 2009 Motolite Fiesta Conference, while earning for themselves the Motolite/Accel-PBA Press Corps’ Co-Players of the Week honors for the period May 18 to 24.
Tubid was the veritable dynamo Barangay Ginebra sorely wanted in racking up a two wins in three games the past week, its last triumph pushing it into the No. 2 slot and the last automatic semifinals berth.

And in those two wins, Tubid led the Kings not only in scoring, but also in hustle and emotion which seemed to rub off on his teammates in the most positive ways possible.

“Ronald always gives us something extra, kaya nahahawa ang mga ka-teammates niya,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

“Whenever we wanted something to happen for us, Ronald can always be counted on,” Uichico added.

Tubid showed that first with a team-high 20 points in a 122-85 rout of Coke last Wednesday before pouring in 18 in a 114-71 drubbing of Rain or Shine in their rubber for the No. 2 spot last Sunday.

Playing at such a high intensity level could also bare one as only human as the guard-forward only scored 10 points in a 75-76 loss to Alaska last Friday.

Taulava was not left too far behind by the more junior Tubid.

The former MVP showed why he was voted as skipper of not only Coca-Cola but also of the Powerade-RP Team by leading the Tigers to the same 2-1 win-loss record that rewarded them the No. 8 spot and equal chances of advancing to the quarterfinals.

In those three games the 6-foot-9 center averaged 19.7 points and 12 rebounds, highlighted by an 18-18 output – his conference-leading 12th double-double among all locals – in an 81-74 win over Alaska in their one-game playoff for the last Group of Death slot also last Sunday.

Prior to that, Taulava bounced back from a 12-4 output in that 37-point loss to Barangay Ginebra by banging in 29 points and corralling 14 rebounds in a 105-89 win over early semifinalist San Miguel Beer also last Friday.

“Asi showed not only the points, the other statistics. He also showed us true leadership, the Tiger way,” noted Coca-Cola head coach Kenneth Duremdes.

“The Rock” and “Mr. Fearless” are at the top of their games and their playoff opponents are drawing up plans to stop them. (NCo)
