San Mig seeks second win versus Petron; Barako Bull faces struggling Alaska

San Mig Coffee seeks its second straight win against Petron Blaze as they collide in the main tiff of the 2013 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Mixers and the Boosters meet at 6:30 p.m. while Barako Bull and Alaska battle in the opener at 4:15 p.m.

Since beating the Aces, 103-83, last October 5, San Mig Coffee has not played again and coach Tim Cone said the Mixers’ sharpness will be tested by Petron.

“Almost feels like another opening game for us since we haven’t played in a while,” said Cone.

“We’ve been trying to stay sharp and allow guys to make their way back into the lineup.”

Yancy de Ocampo had a career game against Alaska with 22 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and two blocks to lead San Mig Coffee, while Cone also drew solid games from two-time Most Valuable Player James Yap (20 points), Mark Barroca (16), and Peter June Simon (16).

Cone expects a tough grind against the Boosters, who finally won over Barako Bull, 98-89 after dropping their opening assignment to Rain or Shine, 102-86, that spoiled Olsen Racela’s coaching debut.

“Despite their opening day loss, Petron is still, on paper, the best team out there and they show how explosive they can be in their last game,” Cone said.

Meanwhile, Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi hopes his team could bounce back from a loss to stay above .500.

“We played awful against Petron and we can’t afford to have that kind of game against Alaska, which is a good and dangerous team,” he said.

The Aces’ record stands at 0-2, and they are one of the two teams that has to win in the all-Filipino tourney, with the other being GlobaPort (0-3).
